Heathrow's Terminal 5 is a Terrible Mess
The dedicated website for Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 5 cooed into cyberspace, "At London Heathrow Terminal 5 we’ve created a natural, logical journey that’s so calm, you’ll flow through. It shouldn’t take long to get from Check-in to Departures. Transferring and arriving are just as simple and calm. Spend the time you save enjoying the excellent range of shops, cafes and restaurants. Or simply relax and be wowed by the world class architecture."
Instead, travelers using the new £4.3 billion ($8.7 billion) T5 were wowed by utter chaos that began almost as soon as the new facilitiy. In its first four days of operations, at least 250 British Airways flights were canceled, stranding thousands of passengers. At least 15,000 and perhaps 20,000 pieces of luggage that reportedly were not loaded onto the planes need to be "repratriated" to their owners who had, in fact, taken off while their bags were still on the ground. Computer problems were blamed.
In a story called "Flight Club at Heathrow T5," the Sun newspaper reported of a brawl among 30 baggage handlers. BA could be libel for compensation up to a stunning £5,000 per passenger, it was further reported. At the very least, the airline had to arrange for and pay for emergency accommodations for armies of stranded passengers. Image-conscious Brits are have a cow, and the tabloids are having a field day.
Long-haul flights were said to be operating close to schedule today (Sunday). Domestic (i.e., within the UK) flights and flights to the European continent have been most affected. "We are endeavoring to do everything we can to get the operation back to normal," said an unnamed but clearly beleaguered spokeswoman for British Airways. Of course. The airline claimed that 400 employees volunteered to work on Sunday to help with what the BBC described as "mountains of suitcases stacked up in the terminal after passengers were unable to reclaim them or were forced to fly on to their destinations without their luggage, and which the BBC continued "could take weeks to sort out."
The flying public will have to take their word for it, because BBC also said that "it had been banned from filming at the terminal, where hundreds of passengers were facing long delays. Even when the chaos has been straightened out and T5 is humming as promised, Heathrow will remain an incredibly congested airport. It is the world's third-busiest airport (after Chicago/O'Hare and Atlanta/Hartsfield) and has just two runways, meaning that delays are endemic, even without a snafu like T5's opening days. In wisdom that matches US automakers' foresight, US-based Delta, Continental Airlines, Northwest and United began flights into London's chronically constripated Heathrow Airport on Mar. 30, even as their BA brethren were still struggling under mountains of luggage. At least the American carriers won't be using T5.

"The debacle, which is estimated to have cost BA £20 million already, will mean the airline has been forced to scrap more than 450 flights since the opening of the £4.3 billion Terminal last week. The chaos would have been even worse had the airline not decided to continue operating the bulk of its long-haul operation from Terminal 4."

Aircraft-Bird Encounters Rise
The surprise water landing of a US Airways plane in the Hudson River last January. Investigations revealed that a major bird strike had knocked out at least one engine. All 155 passengers and crew survived, with few injuries, and Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger became an instant hero, making the talk-show circuit and landing a book contract. It turns out that the very aircraft the Sullenberger ditched in the frigid Hudson,
Associated Press reporter Michael J. Sniffen has been looking into bird strikes and has unearthed some amazing figures -- ones we don't generally think about when we fasten our seatbelts low and tight about ourselves and make sure that are seats and tray tables are in their full upright positions. Sniffen reported:
"Airplane collisions with birds or other animals have destroyed 28 aircraftAlysia Patterson filed a Denver-specific AP report, in which she recounted that DIA "led the nation in bird and wildlife strikes last year" -- 318 during the first 11 months of 2008. Of some comfort to passengers, Patterson was told by the FAA's Mike Fergus that DIA has "an aggressive wildlife mitigation program, [and] pilots are more aware of the problem and more apt to report a strike."

voluntary reporting system captures only 20 percent of wildlife strikes. The
agency, however, has refused for a decade to adopt a National Transportation
Safety Board recommendation to make the reports mandatory.
"...The Federal Aviation Administration says there were about 65,000 bird
strikes to civil aircraft in the United States from 1990 to 2005, or about one
for every 10,000 flights....air traffic control towers routinely
alert pilots if there are birds in the area."
Whenever I've felt a jolt when taking off from or approaching DIA, I have assumed that it was turbulence of some sort. Next time, I'll speculate (to myself, not to my seatmate) that it might be due to a bird strike.

Denver International Airport Unveils Calatrava Addition
Come 2016, assuming a dramatic proposal is approved, Denver International Airport (DEN) should have what travelers to and from many (if not most) major world airports take for granted: a hotel attached to the terminal and a rail connection with the downtown core of their respective cities and, in countries with decent train service, beyond -- all wrapped up in a dramatic sweeping new-for-Denver international style designed to complement the existing main terminal topped with a little Teflon range of peak-like tents..
It's about time, considering that DIA is the 10th-busiest airport in the world and the fifth-busiest in the US. Officials have revealed the conceptual design of what will be called the South Terminal designed by superstar architect Santiago Calatrava. The rail link is to be via RTD’s FasTracks East Corridor, which is also to be built. Calatrava's shop has designed a train station, a signature rail bridge (below) and a plaza. A 500-room hotel and conference center (probably to be branded by Westin) connected to Jeppesen Terminal is also part of the plan, which was originally part of DIA concept when the airport was still on the drawing boards some two decades ago.
The hotel, the landmark bridge and the train station, known as Phase I of the South Terminal Redevelopment Program Phase I, are estimated to cost $650 million. Phase II includes another new parking structure and renovations to the Jeppesen Terminal Great Hall, which was designed before the age of haute security with screening area clutter imposed on what was originally envisioned as an expansive, soaring futuristic space. Maybe in the process of renovating the terminal, someone will also figure out what to do with the terminal's center design element that had been a fountain of dancing waters and an indoor planter. It has been plagued by leaks and other flaws, which are inconsequential to the airport's operations but do impact on the passengers' aesthetic experiences. Phase II, if/when implemented, could cost an additional $250 million.
Calatrava has designed visually stunning and instantly recognizable structures such as the Sundial Bridge in Redding, California, the TGV Railway Station in Liège, Belgium, the new Sondica Airport terminal in Bilbao, Spain, and the Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, Greece. With Calatrava's name attached to so much of the project, the name of the hotel architect, "Gensler," kind of gets lost in the wash. It too is a global design and architecture firm.
The projected timetable is for the signature rail bridge to be finished by early 2013, the terminal station two years later and RTD’s train itself scheduled begin carrying passengers between Denver Union Station and the airport in 2016. The 22.8-mile airport corridor is the first for RTD to use commuter rail technology, with larger and heavier cars than the existing light rail system. Welcome Airline Flexibility
Yesterday, I wrote about a decidedly unpleasant experience (not mine) that involved a stunningly unsympathetic and inflexible cabin crew that refused to permit an economy passenger with a "bathroom emergency" use the front-cabin lav. Today, I can report on a surprising example of airline flexibility that made a travel experience (mine) go more smoothly than I would have expected.
I am attending a conference in New York starting on Monday, and thought that while I was in this part of the country, I would squeeze in a visit to cousins in Maryland. I was flying United to Newark and intended to take Amtrak to Baltimore. I left Boulder in the snow and arrived at Denver International in the rain. When I checked in, I was told that my 10:55 flight had been canceled, but that there was another at 12:55, and was directed to the "cancelled flight" counter. I explained my plans and asked the counter agent if it would be possible to reroute me to Baltimore, which is where I was going.
In checking with her supervisor, she said that I had been rerouted "through Chicago -- tomorrow." Ohmygosh. How inconvenient! The supervisor approved my one-time courtesy itinerary change, without a fee,to a flight departing at 11:00 -- five minutes later than the original. It's not the kind of response I've gotten accustomed to at United, but I was really happy, especially when I arrived at BWI some three hours earlier than I anticipated. And....when I called Amtrak to cancel, they credited my charge card -- without penalty and no questions asked.
So thanks, United, and thanks, Amtrak.

Clipped-Wing Concorde May Head to Dubai
I don't usually indulge in speculative news, but the headline, "Concorde jet
may become tourist attraction," on a news-oriented UK travel blog called Travel House UK did intrigue me. According to Travel House which in turn cited The Times, "a consortium is reportedly bidding to turn one of British Airways’ seven remaining Concorde supersonic jets into a tourist attraction, while BA said it was mulling its options." If the supersonic plane travels to Dubai, it will literally be by slow boat, its wings removed in order to fit it onto a ship, presumably to pass through the Suez Canal.The word from "a source close to the Dubai consortium" is the group would spend millions in whatever currency to restore the interior of the plane that is currently mothballed at Heathrow Airport in London. I never flew on the Concorde, alas, but I think I sort of saw the aircraft through thick hedges when driving to or from the airport. But I'm not sure. Britain's grounded Concorde fleet is dispersed around the country and open to visitors.
Four decades ago, the supersonic Concorde, a collaborative project between Great Britain and France, was herald as the future of air travel. Beginning in 1976, British Airways and Air France few them, mainly for elite transatlantic travel. Only 20 ever came off the assembly line in Toulouse, with six used for future developments for a future that didn't happen and 14 operated commercially and, safely until July 2000, when a crash Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport that killed 113 people was the beginning of the end for all Concordes. British and French planes were all taken out of service in 2003. Crash or not, this SST would most likely not have survived the huge fuel cost run-up of 2008 and the global economic crisis that followed.

Travel on Sale; Flight Delays Drop
Anyone with the time and money to travel can reap the benefits of lower prices, frequent fare sales and discounts, discounts, discounts and, did I mention?, discounts. This reduction in both passengers and scheduled flights meant fewer airline delays in 2008 than in '07, according to a new report by George Mason University's Center for Air Transportation Systems Research. Academic types have gathered data to tell frequent flyers what we already know: air travel might be getting cheaper, but in many respects, the experience still, well, sucks.
The center calculated that airline passengers experienced delays totaling 299 million hours (34,000 years!) in 2008, which roughly translates to an annual cost of $8.2 billion in lost productivity. If the center had also quantified the impact of slow-moving security lines and slow-arriving baggage, the lost productivity numbers would be even higher.
“While passenger trip delay numbers are improved, the structural issues with the air transportation system remain,” said Lance Sherry, an associate professor at George Mason University and author of the report. “The reduction of flights should have taken some pressure off of the system. This did not happen."
According to Sherry, the average delay was down only two minutes for an average delay of 29 minutes. Twenty-nine or 31 minutes on anybody's watch is a half-hour delay. "Disruptions" seem to be worse than mere "delays." Dishearteningly for anyone heading for the airport, for the last two years, one-quarter of passengers experienced a travel disruption. In 2008 disruptions averaged "only" 108 minutes; in 2007, it was 112 minutes. The glimmer of good news is that this represents a 10 overall percent decrease in delays compared to 2007.
Contributing to the problems were that airlines reduced the number of flights by 6 percent and also switched to smaller, less expensive aircraft flying less frequently, according to Sherry. "The airlines cut the least profitable flights that operate at off-peak times of the day. Eliminating these flights did little to trim delays for the profitable flights that are still over scheduled in the peak hours at the major airports...Fewer flights were cancelled in 2008, but those passengers also had fewer rescheduling options because of the reduced frequency of flights and fully booked flights."
The fewest trip delays were experienced on Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines, all with an average of 10 minutes or less. Passengers endured the most trip delays on American Airlines, with an average delay of 31 minutes.
For the third consecutive year, passengers experienced an average of trip delays of more than 30 minutes at New York's three airports: Newark, LaGuardia and JFK, and also at Chicago's O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth and Boston's Logan . Of the nation's busiest 35 airports the fewest delays were at Salt Lake City, Honolulu, Baltimore/Washington, Phoenix Sky Harbor and Chicago's Midway.

Best Craft Brews at US Airports
Being a wine drinker, I was cheered sometime ago when Vino Volo, a chain of upscale wine bars, was rumored to be considering an outlet at Denver International Airport. It hasn't happened yet, and the little chain has only established outposts at nine US airports (Sacramento, Seattle/Tacoma, San Antonio, Detroit and five in the Middle Atlantic). One is in the American Airlines Terminal at New York's JFK, but I sure wish there were one in the airport's main international terminal. I flew to Cairo recently on Egyptair, an alcohol-free carrier, and I certainly wish I had been able to sip a glass of wine better than what the sports bar nearest to my gate poured.
Not being a beer drinker, the new Beer Lover's Airport Guide on cheapflights.com is only a matter of passing curiosity to me personally, but it's an invaluable resource for thirsty flyers who appreciate quality beer and ale. The airports where writer Jerome Greer Chandler found good craft beers are Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York/JFK, Orlando, Philadelphia, Portland (Oregon), Raleigh, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Washington National and Washington Dulles. West Bank/Palestine Travels, Day 1
At Denver International Airport, I saw the controversial statue of Horus (below), a complicated ancient Egyptian god whose statue has been placed right outside the main terminal in honor of the upcoming King Tut exhibition at the Denver Art Muesum. I'm missing the media preview this week.
Easy flight to Newark, long layover and then comfy transatlantic flight. I used miles and money to upgrade to Continental's Business/First for the long overnight flight to Tel Aviv.
Arrived in Tel Aviv, met group at airport and boarded bus driven by "Captain" Samr and listened to intro to the Palestinian Territories by Samir Bahbah (below) of the Arab Tour Guides Association. His story exemplifies the complexities of this area. He is a Catholic by religion, Palestinian by nationality and Arab by ethnicity. He grew up and lives in East Jerusalem, so he has a Jordanian passport yet is an Israeli citizen who cannot vote and does not have to serve in the Army.
Our bus traveled through the outskirts of Jeruslem and the first of many security checkpoints we would encounrter and directly into Bethlehem and checked into the Jacir Palace Intercontinental Hotel (below, top image), a luxury hotel affixed to an opulent villa on the oturskirts of the city. My room (below, bottom) is comfortable but not lavish, yet the public spaces in the old mansion are exceptionally atmospheric. When I went to open my bag, the TSA-compliant lock was gone and the loop on the zipper pull where the lock fit through was broken. Too much time in Newark -- or or likely something at the airport here, where enthsiastic Israeli security agents don't bother with the device that opens TSA-complient locks? I'll never know, but now, I guess that I'll have to carry my netbook with me everywhere.
Light buffet dinner during this very low season.. A few of us went for a short walk, and then back to the hotel. Room is fine. Bedside table holds a New Testament in three languages (German, English, French) and a Koran in Arabic (below). It's been a long time since I've been in a hotel room with an ashtray! A liter of water was a nice consideration, because the tap water is not potable. Oh, how I wish they'd put a second bottle of water in my room.

I Fought Jet Lag and the Jet Lag Won
- Melatonin - No significant effect on me.
- No Jet-Lag pills (right), an over-the-counter, homeopathic formulation that I buy at Changes in Latitude, a local travel store. It seemed to work a little better, but I forgot to get some this time.
- Flying from the US West Coast, which means for longer flights, which is even better for my body clock on the eastbound portion but makes the westbound trip even longer, because I have to backtrack one time zone.
- Sleeping pills, mainly because on principle, I don't take sleeping pills on land, let alone in the air. I'd rather be tired than drugged.
- The anti-jet leg lag diet, because it's complicated and requires a multi-day regimen of meal manipulation.
My epic return journey from Cairo to Colorado on Tuesday, February 10, was as follows:
- 7:30 a.m.: Departure from hotel in Cairo.
- 8:00 a.m. +/-: Arrival at airport to stand in long line for baggage X-ray/metal detector just to get into the terminal. Once inside, long line to check bag and get boarding pass. Long line for X-ray of carry-ons and stroll through metal detector. Short line for Egyptian passport control. Wait for boarding.
- 10:15 a.m.: After a third X-ray/metal detector process that included TSA requirements (shoes off, laptop out of case, discard bottled water except that sealed and presented with a receipt from an airport shop) and another presentation of the boarding pass to an official stationed on the jetway, boarded the plane for the scheduled departure of Egyptair 985 from Cairo.
- 3:15 p.m. Eastern Time: Arrival at JFK International Airport. Mercifully short line for immigration, bag landed on the carousel fairly quickly, walk through customs and on to Delta terminal.
- 6:55 p.m. Eastern Time: Departure of Delta 167.
- 10:46 p.m. Mountain Time: Arrival in Denver, which meant that I got to the main terminal and baggage claim a few minutes after the 10:18/10:25 RTD bus left for Boulder. I toughed it out for the bus an hour later. As I walked toward the bus, whose door was open, my water bottle fell out of the side pocket out of my day pack, which I had over one shoulder. I bent over to retrieve the water bottle without smashing my laptop against the concrete, and when I stood up, the bus was pulling out.
- 11:35 p.m.: I gave up on RTD and took SuperShuttle, which dropped me off at my door an hour later.
I am trying to draw a conclusion or learn a lesson from this, but so far, I haven't succeeded. I do know that seeing Egypt's incomparable antiquities was worth the jet-lag misery. And at the end of the travel day, that's all that matters.

Photo: Levitating an Airplane in Miami
Back in the '80s, I used to write a newsletter for an aircraft trade school then called the Academy of Aeronautics (now the Vaughn College of Aeronautics) that trained young men (and they were all men in those days). The school was located across the Grand Central Parkway from LaGuardia Airport. When a small plane (I can't remember what kind) was donated to the school, it was flown into LGA and then was to be airlifted, dangling from a helicopter, across the highway. During those few minutes, the NYPD closed all eight lanes of traffic between the airport and the school. I tried desperately to interest the local television news and the three big New York daily newspapers to send a crew (TV) or photographer (print) to capture this remarkable sight in the middle of the day. No luck. It appeared in the AoA newsletter, and that was just about all.
Fast forward to 2010 and the Internet age. American Airlines donated an MD-80 to the George T. Baker Aviation School, similarly across a highway from Miami International Airport. A Florida construction and engineering company lifted the 39-ton plane across he highway using a 500-ton crane outfitted with a 400-foot telescoping boom. Photographer Joe Pries captured the procedure for airport authorities, and undoubtedly, everyone around with a cell phone got it too. I couldn't get a lone cameraman to LGA back then, and this photo is now all over the Internet.

Cairo: Airport Impressions
If you arrive without a visa, as many/most foreign tourists do, don't go straight to passport control. Go to the bank, where $15 will buy you a Monopoly money-size visa that will be pasted into your passport and decorated with an impressive official stamp. Also, don't expect anyone to take the entry or customs declaration forms that you filled out.
My initial impression therefore is of a bureaucratic country with systems that are not necessarily intuitive or logical to the outsider.

TSA Tightens Policies -- After Bombing Suspect Slipped Through
Little old ladies, families with toddlers and harried road warriors better be prepared for closer scrutiny by the Transportation Security Agency. After permitting Faisal Shahzad, who was charged with last Saturday's (fortunately) unsuccessful attempt to detonate a car bomb in New York's Times Square, screeners permitted him to pass through security at JFK International Airport on Monday evening, and Emirates Airlines let him on the plane.
Shahzad's name had been added to the no-fly list a few hours earlier, but it appears that no one (or at least no one with both responsibility and a functioning brain) at the agency or the airline had bothered to look at the list. He reportedly purchased his one-way ticket with cash in the last minute.Isn't that supposed to be brightest of all red flags? He could well have been winging his way to Dubai International Airport andthen on to Pakistan efore anyone looked at the list. Things changed fast after the close call.
Even though TSA personnel are supposed to match names on airline tickets with photo IDs before letting them proceed to the metal-detector and X-ray of carry-ons, airlines are responsible for monitoring the no-fly list. Everyone involed has gotten a wake-up call.
The government is now requiring airlines to check the no-fly list within two hours after being notified that the list had been updated. Until this new policy was instituted, airlines had had to check for updated every 24 hours. In 24 hours, a passenger boarding an international flight could be anywhere in the world. While TSA agents missed Shahzad at the security checkpoint and Emirates missed him when he checked in, Customs and Border Protection spotted his name on the passenger list and apprehended him before the plane took off for Dubai, Emirates' home base Meanwhile, since the incident,.Emirates, an enthusiastic proponent of Open Skies, does not mention a word of new alertness on its website.
According to a report in Travel Weekly, a travel trade publication, "The U.S. government's plan is to eventually take over the task of watch list matching. In 2009, the government began phasing in domestic flights. International flights aren’t covered by the government yet."
Like the Army is often accused of "fighting the last war," the TSA has been obsessed with the America's big airline incident, namely 9/11. The hijackers took over aircraft on domestic flights, so the security efforts have been directed there. A U.S.-bound Nigerian with explosives sewn into his underwear and a troubled Pakistani-American on the lam for a failed midtown Manhattan car bombing just wasn't on U.S. security's radar screen.
Good that someone was paying attention. And I hope that the TSA can keep its collective eyes and minds open, look for something else "unusual" and lay off little old ladies, families with toddlers and harried road warriors.

Carbon Offset Kiosk Coming to an Airport Near You
Come spring, eco-conscious travelers flyhing out of San Francisco International Airport will be able to buy certified carbon offsets at self-service kiosks in a one-year pilot program (yes, that's an intentional pun) set up by 3Degrees, a local company that deals in renewable-energy and carbon-reduction investments. The San Francisco Airport Commission has authorized a $163,000 startup costs to provide kiosks, initially at the customer service desk in Terminal 3 and two wings of the International Terminal.
The kiosk will probably look a lot like an ATM or airline check-kiosk. According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, the flier will punch in the destination, and the kiosk's computer will calculate the carbon footprint and the cost of carbon credits to offset that particular flight. A credit card swipe then will buy the necessary credits.
Buying this credits will be an environmental good deed, but it's not a charity, so the cost is not tax-deductible. 3Degree's Krista Canellakis told the paper, "While the carbon offsets purchased at kiosks can't be seen or touched, they are an actual product with a specific environmental claim whose ownership is transferred at the time of purchase."
According city and airport officials, 3Degrees and city will choose projects to be funded from a list certified by the city's Environment Department such as "renewable energy ventures in developing countries, agriculture and organic waste capture, coal mine methane capture, and sustainable forestry." A portion of each offset purchase will also go to "the San Francisco Carbon Fund, which supports local projects such as energy-efficiency programs and solar panel installations for low-income housing, as well as efforts to convert waste oils into biodiesel fuels."
The cost of these offset purchases for travelers has not be finalized yet, but 3Degrees' web-based "carbon calculator" suggests that offsetting a two-hour trip using about 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide would cost about $4 per person. Offsetting a trip to Europe would is guesstimated at $36. Thirty percent of the revenues will go to 3Degrees and the rest to the city. If it works at SFO, it's sure to spread to other airports as well. Profits for the company, revenues to the airport without requiring any additional services other than electricity and a clear conscience for travelers. Seems like a good bet for success.
Ironically, just as SFO is ready to welcome the 21st century commodity of carbon offset credits, the city is set to bid farewell to Stacey's Bookstore, an 85-year-old institution at 581 Market Street, one of the diminishing independent book dealers that have sadly fallen victim to changing times.

Fly the Arbitrary Skies
7:40 a.m. - Arrived at Denver International Airport and printed out boarding pass to San Francisco.
7:50 a.m. - Got into long but fast-moving security line. Carried on overhead-size roll-aboard, thin laptop case and small purse. No problem, even though the limit is now supposedly two pieces.
9:00 a.m. - United Flight 498 scheduled for departure.
9:30 a.m. - Captain announced that airplane had "issues" and he wasn't taking it anywhere until maintenance had looked at it.
9:50 a.m. - Maintenance looked. Airplane "issues" had not been resolved, so PAX asked to take their belongs and proceed to Gate 48.
10:10 a.m. - Gate 48 turned out to be Gate 45 (or vice versa), where (fortunately) the same type of aircraft was waiting -- fortunate because all seat assignments were still valid. To its credit, the airline was trying to expedite transit for PAX heading from SFO to Asia.
1:00 p.m. - Arrived at SFO something like two hours late, wondering whether United would give PAX vouchers for, say, $25 or $50 off future flights. Silly me.

1:05 p.m. - Arrived at SFO for United Flight 720, departing for Denver at 2:26. Printed out boarding pass.
1:15 p.m. - No line at nearby security. Carried on same overhead-size roll-aboard, thin laptop case and small purse. TSA gatekeeper told me that I had to check the roll-aboard because I had three pieces while only two were permitted.
1:16 p.m. - Paid UAL $25 to check the same piece of luggage that I had been permitted to carry on a few days earlier. Guy who tagged the bag asked, "How are you today?" I replied, "I was better before the TSA told me that I had to check this." "That's because it's too bulky to fit into the overhead," said he. Huh!
2:15 p.m.: Along with all the other instructions, flight attendant announced that heavy bags must be stored on the sides of the overhead bins and lighter ones in the middle. That was a new one on me.
3:00 p.m.: Requested Diet Coke during beverage service. Flight attendant gave me one of those squishy plastic cups that spill over when the slightest pressure is applied. It was like an iceberg, with 90 percent of the ice below the rim and the rest mounded above it. I asked her to please dump half of the ice. "What's wrong with it?" she all but snarled. I explained. She said that since I already had taken possession of it, she couldn't take it back and would have to give me another one. Ferchissakes, she was standing right there with her beverage cart. I did not view this as an imposition, but her demeanor implied that it was. I thanked her anyway.
5:35 p.m. - Flight landed -- half an hour early. Great! All was forgiven. Even though I was seated back in Row 33, I figured I could still make th 6:20 p.m. SkyRide to Boulder.
5:55 p.m. - Waiting at baggage carousel. No luggage.
6:00 p.m. - Still waiting.
6:10 p.m. - A few bags arrived. Then nothing, except an announcement that there was a bag jam below and the rest of the bags would be arriving soon.
6:20 p.m. - Still waiting. Some bags had come up, but not mine.
6:30 - My bag arrived, so the TSA checker's refusal to let me carry on exactly the same three items I had carried on earlier in the week cost me $25 and an hour of my time.

Bad Air Year
The Colorado media has, of course, been reporting extensively on the crash-and-burn of Continental Flight 1404, which had just taken off from Denver International Airport bound for Houston International. "DIA Crash Injures 38," the Sunday Denver Post page-one headline trumpeted. "Plane Mishap Hurts 38," wrote the kinder, gentler Boulder Camera. The Boeing 737 airliner accident was all over the airwaves all weekend long. The plane veered off the runway, shed an engine somewhere along the way, burst into flames and came to battered and bruised rest near an airport fire station.
It got me thinking about how cavalier many of us travelers tend to be about reading the safety in instruction card that shows where emergency exits are located, and whether or not we are the best passengers to wrestle with the emergency door, should the plane need to be evacuated. It also got me thinking about what a tough year 2008 has been for air travelers. Here are just a few of the incidents and accidents I've blogged about this year:
- With uncharacteristic snow and ice this week in the Pacific Northwest, service has just about come to a halt at Sea-Tac International Airport, with the most flight cancellations in 30 years, according to tonight's "ABC News." On the other side of the country, New York airports were reporting delays of up to five hours, as well as dozens of flight cancelations, as was Chicago's O'Hare, which is a chronic winter mess.
- Close to home, Denver International Airport became less international when United dropped its Denver-London nonstop just seven months after inaugurating it, and Lufthansa halted its Denver-Munich nonstop after 1 1/2 years of service.
- Elsewhere just this year, America's skies are no longer plied by TED (United's low-fare airline), Mesa Airlines (a Delta commuter partner), SkyBus (based in Ohio), Aloha Airlines (based in Hawaii) and ATA (based in Indiana). Denver-based Frontier is still flying, but under Chapter XI bankruptcy protection.
- As aviation fuel prices rose over the spring and summer and the recession of 2008 began taking hold, other airlines trimmed flights, mothballed aircraft. bumped more passengers than ever and began charging (or charging more) for checked luggage, curbside check-in, inflight food and even soft drinks, more desirable seats, flight changes and other formerly included services. Av-gas is down, but these add-on fees largely remain in place.
- The Transportation Security Agency has reportedly terminated 465 screeners for pilferage since May 2003. The TSA has demonstrated ineptitude, even wehen there is no malfeasance. you can read some terrible but true TSA tales here and here. The agency also introduced an intrusive full-body scanner at some US airports.
- Violent an anti-government protests in once peaceful Thailand resulted in the closure of airports in Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi and elsewhere for more than a week in late November and early December. Protestors belonging to a group called the People's Alliance for Democracy took over Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport , using the electricity and water and stranding more than 300,000 would-be air travelers, including 240,000 foreign tourists.
- Heathrow's highly anticipated Terminal 5 had such fatal computer problems that instead of a grand opening, it was a grand fiasco. At least 250 British Airways flights were canceled, stranding thousands of passengers and separating 15,000 or 20,000 pieces of luggage from their owners.
- XL Travel and its charter airline went out of business. XL had been a major player in Britain's tourism industry.

P.S. II on December 26 - Still More Air Travel Woes
Now it was Southwest Airlines' turn to do an airport slide. Southwest Flight 688 leaving snowy Chicago's Midway Airport for snowfree Los Angeles slid off a slick taxiway today (Friday) and got stuck snow along the shoulder. Ninety-eight people were aboard, and there were no injuries.
P.S. III on December 27 - Partial Blackout at DIA
A power outage on Saturday, December 27, affected Denver Interational Airport, not the three concourses (or, as they are now called, gate terminals) and not the control tower -- but, you guessed it: the security area, which lost power. The Transportation Security Administration screeners had to do manual security checks, meaning that everyone was patted down or wanded, and all carry-ons were opened. The delay to pass through security was reported to be about 45 minutes. The airport estimated that 155,000 travelers were expected to pass through DIA on Saturday. Oh, the humanity!

Frontier Introduces Three-Tier Fare Pricing
roduced air fares on three price tiers that it cleverly calls AirFairs: the "economy" fare with nothing included (no checked included and no flexibility to change tickets), the "classic" fare (including two checked bags, snack and drink, and in-flight television) and the fully refundable "classic plus" with checked luggage and in-flight entertainment also included.The "classic" fare starts at about $20 more than the "economy" fare and includes two checked bags and an in-flight movie, which the airline reminds passengers is a $46 saving right there. Higher tiers also net more points for members of its Early Returns frequent-flyer program.

Southwest to Start Service to New York in '09
Southwest is planning to start service to New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in June 2009. Since, IMO, LaGuardia is one of the worst, most congested, most unfriendly airports in the country, this might just put a damper on Southwest's high customer approval ratings. LGA, Newark (EWR) and JFK International, New York's major airports, among them are credited or blamed for something like 70 percent of the flight delays in the entire country. That's is the reason that Southwest has for years avoided New York, flying no closer than Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP), which is 50 miles from Manhattan. That's twice as far as Denver International Airport is from downtown Denver, and about the same distance as DIA is from Boulder.
Southwest, which reportedly is planning to fill the void at LGA when ATA went belly-up, is being quite coy about announcing which airports will be on the other end of the new routes. ATA's gates became available, and Southwest grabbed them -- not that there's all that much competition right now with airlines folding like a deck of cards in a poker game.

Chicago Neighborhood Wrecked for O'Hare's Hoped-For New Runway
I have no affection for O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and try very hard to avoid connecting there -- especially in winter. So I see the upside to a new runway, part of a proposed $15 billion makeover of this busy, congested and inefficient airport. The plan is to replace the congestion-prone model of intersecting runways with a modern parallel runway design. However, I probably won't live long enough to see it completed. The operative word is "proposed," because there is not yet a timetable or a guarantee of funding. As the Chicago Tribune reported (along with a sad picture):
"The remnants of a laundromat and a fast-food restaurant known in the Bensenville neighborhood for its tasty hot dogs fell like matchsticks to O'Hare International Airport's expansion plans on Wednesday. It took only minutes for the walls and roof to tumble on a commercial building that also housed two other businesses.So help me understand this. Bensenville's Frank Soto accepted a $16 million payoff to stop opposing an airport expansion that might not happen -- at least not soon. For Chicago, which hopes to modernize it's airport, 16 mill is a small investment in what might be a $15 billion mega-project (or higher, since big construction projects rarely comes on time and under budget). I don't know how much, if anything, people got as compensation for losing their homes or bsuinesses. Unless my arithmetic is way off (which it could be), the payment to Bensenville came to less than $27,000 per vacated and wrecked building.
"A pair of backhoes armed with claws called munchers'" ripped down the brick exterior of the first of about 500 buildings in the northwest suburb that will leveled. The demolitions are set to make way for the final new runway planned in Chicago's $15 billion overhaul of O'Hare. Dust from the teardown, at 439 E. Irving Park Road, seemed to swirl together with clouds of doubt over the prospects of Chicago completing the massive project, especially with the airline industry in financial turmoil.
"Bensenville Village President Frank Soto acknowledged there are no guarantees the runway will be built. Soto late last year accepted a $16 million payment to the village from Chicago along with other enticements in exchange for Bensenville dropping its decades-long opposition to O'Hare expansion.
"Asked by a reporter Wednesday whether he would object to other uses of the more than 400 acres in Bensenville that Chicago acquired under eminent domain rules if O'Hare expansion were retooled, Soto said: 'We wouldn't mind not having a runway there.'"
So the neighborhood was wrecked for an uncertain airport future. Meanwhile, vacated Bensonville buildings south of the airport. According to the press release, "Since last fall, the CDA [Chicago Department of Aviation] has worked with the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) to provide a unique, hands-on multi-agency training in the now vacant, acquired properties in the Village of Bensenville. The area has been used as a multi-agency training ground for safety and security agencies including the U. S. Department of Justice, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Chicago Police Department, the Chicago Fire Department, the Village of Bensenville, and many city, county, state, federal and assist agencies."
